Effective traveler information and traffic management
systems depend on the quality of the information provided. People
want to know how long it will take to get to their destination,
especially when incidents and other unexpected events occur. Likewise,
system managers want accurate incident detection and origin-destination
information so that they can understand travel patterns along major
highway corridors. One means of obtaining this information is to
use individual vehicles in the traffic stream as probes and measure
the time it takes to move them between certain points.
